While working and exploring Singapore, The LifeStyleFactory Team visited the Supertree Observatory as well as the Gardens by the Bay (we will talk about this part of Singapore more in the upcoming blog) several times. We wanted to explore this wonder during the day and night, enjoy several shows, and get into details about how and why it was built, and as you can imagine this is a very time-consuming task. However, we can not say that we did not enjoy every second spent at the Gardens by the Bay. From walking amongst the trees, than strolling on the observatories skyway and even enjoying the show and magical lights whilst enjoying a delicious meal specially prepared in one of the best restaurants in Marina Bay hotel we have to say that we were mesmerized by the whole area of Gardens by the Bay, especially the Supertrees.
This iconic structure, nestled within the breathtaking Supertree Grove, offers not only a captivating panorama of the city but also stands as a symbol of sustainable design and technological innovation.
Rising majestically between 22 to 50 meters, the Supertrees are not your typical flora. Comprising steel frames adorned with built-in panels supporting a diverse array of plants, they create a surreal vertical garden that beckons visitors from around the world. At the forefront of this garden stands the Supertree Observatory, a pinnacle of architectural brilliance.
Designed by Grant Associates (UK), with the imaginative engineering of Atelier One and Atelier Ten, the Supertrees host more than 162,900 plants comprising more than 200 species and varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and tropical flowering climbers.
The architectural significance of the Supertree Observatory lies in its seamless integration with the natural environment. The observatory’s design mirrors the ethos of Gardens by the Bay – a harmonious blend of nature and technology. The futuristic structure complements the organic forms of the Supertrees, creating a visual symphony that captivates the imagination.
As we ascended to the observatory’s heights, we embarked on a journey that transcended conventional architectural norms. The panoramic views from this vantage point redefine the cityscape, showcasing the juxtaposition of Singapore’s modern skyline against the verdant expanse of the Gardens below. The observatory becomes a bridge between urban development and ecological preservation, encouraging a deeper appreciation for sustainable living.
Beyond its aesthetic allure, the Supertree Observatory stands as an embodiment of innovation. Seven of the eighteen Supertrees are equipped with solar panels, transforming these towering structures into functional green energy generators. This integration of renewable energy sources aligns with Singapore’s commitment to sustainability, marking a shift towards a greener and more eco-conscious future.
The observatory’s architectural significance also lies in its role as an immersive educational platform. Through interactive exhibits and informational displays, visitors gain insights into the ecological importance of the Supertrees and the broader mission of Gardens by the Bay. It serves as a living example of how architecture can be a powerful tool for environmental education, fostering a sense of responsibility towards our planet.
The Supertree Observatory’s design embodies the concept of “futuristic nature.” It transports visitors into a realm where the boundaries between the built environment and the natural world blur. The geometric precision of the observatory’s structure, coupled with the organic elegance of the Supertrees, creates a visual spectacle that challenges conventional notions of architectural aesthetics.
In conclusion, the Supertree Observatory at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore stands tall – not only in height but also in its architectural significance. It goes beyond being a mere viewpoint; it is a symbol of sustainable design, a beacon of innovation, and a canvas that paints a vision of a harmonious coexistence between urban development and the natural world. As visitors traverse its heights, they embark on a journey that transcends architectural boundaries, embracing a future where nature and technology converge in breathtaking harmony.
From Lifestylefactory’s lens, it’s an avant-garde testament to sustainable living, seamlessly blending technology and ecology. As visitors marvel at panoramic vistas, they witness the magic of design harmonizing with nature in this iconic Singaporean landmark.
